I am now planning the fishingmad summer trip ,I am so fed up listening to our customers raving about Norway that 3 of us are planning to drive the campervan all 1000 miles to try it for ourselves, Starting here near Bodo at the worlds fastest tidal race and then moving north as time ,weather and fishing permits.

We now have a game camera at Newmill and over the next while we will try and capture images of the Newmill wildlife ,We set ti up for the first time last night and got our first couple of captures

one of our very good customers at Newmill has definitely gone one up on his buddies with this one. A giant 6'' long Loomis fish tatooed on his neck .You can imagine the comments "does he now come with a Loomis lifetime warranty" and does it give you " added control and authority under all conditions"

Steven Walker ,Newmill fishery manager decided sometime ago that carbon fiber had no soul and that he was going to fish with split cane rods (made in a time when fishermen had to have muscles like carbon fiber to use their rods) and finally on Monday he had the success he was looking for with this perfect 11.5 lb salmon caught on a 50 year old 14' Sharpe's of Aberdeen "Scottie" split cane salmon fly rod using a yellow ally's shrimp

A great day was had by all at the Shakespeare sponsored Fishing Frenzy Fun day competition, the sun shone all day on over 100 fishers who took part in several concurrent comps. with prizes for Fly fishing,Trout fishing,Coarse fishing and most important of all children's fishing all supplied by Shakespeare Fishing.Many thanks to all who took part ,it was intended to remind people that fishing is fun and that is exactly what it achieved

Carp

A while back the Newmill boys drained the fly pond to separate the roach from the trout. The plan was to trade 3000 roach for a 1000 small carp. Well today, the little guys arrived.

Right now they are really tiny however, by the end of the summer they should be up to at least a pound each. They will eventually be released into the coarse pond to boost its stock.

Now the highland cows have settled into their new home there was just one thing missing.....

This past Sunday Newmill got a bull.

Rory is already eyeing up which heifer he is going to have first. Come March next year, we should have four more calves to add to the herd.

About two years ago the Animal Liberation Front cut down all the fencing on Newmill's deer park with the intent to set the deer free. Unfortunately their plan backfired as all the deer ended up being culled so they wouldn't get run over or enter the quarry. Newmill never really knew what to replace the deer with so the space has remained empty.

Many ideas of what to put in there were tossed about....Craig's favourite idea was to turn it into a motor cross track. However, at the end of last year Newmill bought a herd of 11 highland cows with the intention of putting them in the former deer park once a fence had been built.

Alistair has worked really hard over the past few months and the fence was finally ready couple of weeks ago. The plan was to under feed the cows for a couple of days so they would follow a bail of hay on the back of the tractor into their new home....well after a bit of cow herding they made it there. They look absolutely magnificent and are a brilliant addition to Newmill.

Open day at Newmill fishery

Despite the atrocious weather Newmill had a great turnout for its first competition of 2008. With the conditions being so bad, we felt the fishing may suffer but in Newmill style it was excellent. Before the competition started I thought bait fishing would win hands down however, fly fishing anglers did just as well.

Frank Richmond, of Carluke, won the biggest bag prize with a total of 17 trout weighing in at 17.4kg. Richmond used maggots and Powerbait to reel in his haul.The 2nd heaviest bag went to Robert Penny, also of Carluke, with a total of 10 fish weighing in at 10.1kg.

The biggest fish of the day was caught by Ryan Donaghy of Livingston. His catch of the day weighed in at 2.3Kg.Under 16 year old prizes went to:
Thomas McFadden for the heaviest bag with a total of 1 fish weighing in at 1.3kg.

Jordan Colville won under 16 biggest fish.Best fly bag went to R. Mclay with a total of 9 fish weighing in at 8.2kg. McLay found success with the yellow dancer - A Newmill standby.
